“Mother”
Acrylic on poster in shadow boxes. Set of 2 series. 3D artificial flower and feathers.

I had two months to create this. My original plan was to take on Joseph Cornell’s shadow boxes, but that didn’t work. Two weeks left and an angel let me stumble upon Alphonse Mucha’s “Cigarettes”. I had to take it on.

Now this is my interpretation of mother nature in today’s society.

Selling? Maybe Lowest price $175

May 22, 2011- Joplin Mo got hit by a horrendous tornado. Ever since that day, a group of 3 other girls and I, found ourselves organizing a fundraiser to help those effected by the tornado.
On June 6, 2011 a group of about 24 students in 6 cars drove from Fayetteville to Joplin, carrying all the supply we were able to fundraise in a 2 week span.

God impacted me on this trip. He showed me that all can me taken away in matter of minutes; nevertheless seconds. Our group passed by the 5 mile radius of destruction, and nothing could escape from me. Not a tear, nor a noise. I was in pure shock. Three weeks later and I’m still dumfounded and confused to how God can destroy and rip everything away from so many people. I know he is powerful, I know he is king, but sometimes I am a little confuses on his methods.

Although He can create masses of destruction, God showed me that there are more important non-superficial things that matter in life.

Enlighten Me

Last week week I had the most breath taking experience with something.

God.

He took my breath away every single day of spring break. Through the hardships and gracefulness of the week. He blessed me with getting to know some amazing people.

One person had to bed my bunk mate. Dezerae Buford. Isn’t her name so fun to say? God has blessed her is so many ways. She has been given such a sweet soul. When I got sick over the break she was the one who threw out my throw up. She was the one who woke me up asking, “Hey. How are you feeling?” and when the first thing I held up is a thumbs up sign, she tells me, “haha actually think about how you feel.” She. Is. Awesome. God gave me the chance to talk to her and share my testimony with her and my other two room mates. They were the first ones who had ever heard it. When I told her I was so scared to be put on the spot to share my testimony in front of the kids we were working with she told me, “Have faith. You’ll do great. God will provide.” Those few words came in such great hand when I ended up being told I had to share my testimony two days later. Hmm..wonder who was behind that?

God also blessed me with Maura Johnson, my best friend’s older sister. She was also like a second mother to me over this trip. She cared for me and restrained me from eating too many pringles. She offers advice to anyone that lends an ear. Something that most people wont ever mast. She’s just so great.

Most of all, the kids we were with. They provided company and comfort that I have missed in my life. The joy that gleamed in their eyes causes me to shiver in remembrance. What these children didn’t know is that even though some of them longed for love, they were so great at delivering it.

On the second day of being at the Olivet MAMS gym, I shared my testimony. The response was impeccable. During my testimony I hit two main tests God throws at me. One involves my health. The other, my family. After I finished, one little boy, Kylan, came up to me and told me he relates to me so much. He doesn’t have the best Christian father figure just like me. Needless to say, the courage this boy has is breath taking. I love him with all my heart.

From Dez, who’s beautiful soul impacts anyone who comes near her, to Kylan’s courage, my spring break leaves me speechless. If I could go back to Memphis right now, I would. God’s power is incredible. He uses everyone in such a different way. He used me last week and allowed something as small as my testimony to impact someone’s life. Even if it was one person. No words could ever sum up God’s glory but these few give a gist of how amazing he is and how we should repay him: Jesus payed it all. All to him I owe.
